Book Review: After Oil (Kristan Cannon)

After Oil
by: Kristan Cannon

Genres: Speculative , Post-Apocalyptic

WE THOUGHT WE HAD NO REASON TO WORRY... WE WERE WRONG.
The residents of the small town of Whitefish are no strangers to snow. Used to being forgotten and having to dig their own way out, no one thought anything of it during one of the coldest winters on record when help just never came. But as fuel runs out and raiders press in on all sides, Derek, Sheridan, and Garrett it's not just the snow they need to dig their way out of...
BETRAYED BY HIS OWN
Garrett is left stranded with limited resources and a team desperate to survive... perhaps a little too desperate when his own assistant leads a mutiny and Garrett finds himself left out in the cold.
FROM DOCTOR TO QUEEN
Working in a busy ER, Sheridan saw the best and worst of humanity - but now she finds herself leading the last bastion of civilization - with Derek as her Master Ranger.
FROM SALESMAN TO MASTER RANGER
Derek, a salesman nearing retirement, and his wife find themselves far from home with little more than the clothes on their back - and lucky enough to find themselves at least among friends on Sheridan's ranch just outside of Whitefish.
Driven to find answers, and his own place in a new world, Derek forms the Rangers from a group similarly displaced citizens and lost wanderers to lead them to find Garrett and bring back one, tiny but bright spark of hope to a fledgling nation... in the form of the solar field on Sheridan's farm.

I've been very slowly ~too slowly~ reading this book for the last several weeks. It was a bit slow to the start, but once you get into it...well, let's just say...you really get into it.

One minor thing that I had a problem with was all of the convenient items the Queen had laying around in her barn...I think they lowkey expected the end of the world...hmmmm *rubs imaginary mustache*. But you soon get over the minor mistakes and begin to focus on the bigger picture; that this book is worth your time. You can read my review of Kindred and Ashes, or The Felix Chronicles to know that I would tell you if this book was horrible. I wouldn't lie to you guys, I have nothing to gain from it.

The hardest thing for me to get over was the obscene number of characters..who, sadly, have quite similar names.  In one of my other reviews, I'd mentioned that a crazy large number of characters immediately turns me off of a book...but for the sake of the author (and the fact that I REALLY wanted to read this), I pushed through it. I'm guessing you're wondering what my trick is for remembering all of the character's names....Well, what you do (only if you read on an ebook) is highlight all of the characters names....and then, when you get crazy tired of that, you just mash most people together until they do something to set themselves apart. If they don't do something that makes you put a name to the face, then they aren't plot material.

Okay, back on topic, the descriptions of scenery were superb. I've never been to Canada, but I can probably navigate Sudbury.....Okay, that's a lie because I'm horrible at directions, but someone with decent directional skills wouldn't have any issue at all.

Now the real question here is "But was it worth it? Was it worth falling behind on your reviews to finish this book?"

Well, my lovely readers, the answer to that  is yes. It was so worth it. It's worth it because this could very well be OUR future! You can picture this world because it's OUR world! It's not some alien-ridden, volcanic-ash-covered, post-apocalyptic wasteland....it's the snowy Canadian countryside. I mean, really, this future is almost inevitable. It's not a question of if this will happen, but a question of  when, and will we be prepared. Will we survive after oil?

As always, links will be below. Make sure you pop back in tomorrow: we have a big day planned!

I'll blog you lovelies later! <3
