Book Review: Filthy Beautiful Lies

Filthy Beautiful Lies
by Kendall Ryan
Genres: Romance, Erotica
I have no idea why she auctioned off her virginity for a cool mill. Regardless, I'm now the proud new owner of a perfectly intact hymen. A lot of good that will do me. I have certain tastes, certain sexual proclivities. My cock is a bit more discriminatory than most. And training a virgin takes finesse and patience - both of which I lack.
Sophie Evans has been backed into a corner. With her sister's life hanging in the balance, the only choice is to claw her way out, even if that means selling her virginity to the highest bidder at an exclusive erotic club. When Colton Drake takes her home, she quickly learns nothing is as it seems with this beautifully troubled man. Being with him poses challenges she never expected, and pushes her to want things she never anticipated.
A sinfully seductive erotic romance where everything has a price and the cost of love is the highest of all from New York Times & USA Today bestselling author, Kendall Ryan.
When I picked up this book, it was originally because I just wanted to read something different. Something that was just simple and easy -- thoughtless. When I opened Filthy Beautiful Lies I never thought I would care about the characters, or wonder where they'll end up. Walking into this, I never imagined that I would be leaving with another amazing story to add to the countless others I hope to encounter.
If you're looking for an erotica book that doesn't drop off as soon as the sex happens, if you're looking for an erotica book that has a decent plot, intriguing characters, and makes you wonder why all books aren't written like that, here you go.

Did I miss something?!?!?!? I had high hopes for Confessions, but it lacked depth and consistency. In the beginning, probably the first 18-25 pages, there was a plot that seemed to be building towards a pretty interesting story line, but then it vanished.....key the never-ending sex scene. Once the clothes came off the characters stopped developing, the plot was forgotten, and this book was no longer worth reading.

Until next time.....

Book Review: Tangled Web (Lizzie James)

Tangled Web
by: Lizzie James

Genres: Romance, Erotica
**Contains explicit sexual situations**

“Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive!”

At the top of London’s ivory towers business is ruled over by the Walker and the Johnson families. There is no competition. No battle. It is all out war.

When Chloe Johnson – the baby of the Johnson family – decides to move back home to London there was one rule: Stay away from Nathan Walker.

One problem with that.

Nathan Walker wants her. Nathan will get her. Nothing will get in his way until Chloe becomes his.

Tangled Web wasn't a horrible book, but it definitely lacked depth. I felt like the opportunity was there to expand, but it seemed as though the content was more of a novel outline and less of a completed book. The characters were well developed, but I kept hoping for more of a back story. I can't help but think that I would have felt more of a connection with the characters if the time was spent on explaining what happened between the Walker & Johnson families. Knowing what severed their relationship, all those years ago, would have made it easier to relate and/or choose side.

This is a cliffhanger. So, there were quite a few things left unresolved.....which I'm not a huge fan. I'm not giving up on Lizzie James, or the Johnson's & Walkers. I'm hopeful that the next book will provide us with everything that this one lacked.

Book Review: The Taming of Jenesa (J Michael Storm)

The Taming of Jenesa
by: J Michael Storm

Genres: Erotica, Horror, Sci-Fi, Suspense, Intrigue, Adult
**This book contains strong sexual content**

There are predators all around us. Some of them are quite easy to spot, they are monsters that look like monsters. However there are some, quite a few in fact, that have the skills, the cunning, intellect and manipulative ability to perpetrate their malevolence within a shroud of perpetual anonymity. Bobby and Keri Allen are such predators. Cloaked in a veil of the ordinary and the mundane, they are in reality, the most implacable and loathsome of things.
For years they’ve hunted their prey with naked lust, taking advantage of the helpless, the discarded, the lonely or sometimes, just the careless or the unlucky. Possessed of an unwavering perseverance, meticulous precision and skill and fueled with a voracious appetite whose malign sexual greed is boundless, they pluck hapless victims with heartless impunity.
But their lordship over their hunting grounds may soon be over. Something or someone has been watching them! Their stalking has come to the attention of another predator, this one, perhaps, even more dangerous and resourceful than themselves and this interloper has penetrated deep into their highly protected and secured sanctuaries, threatening their exposure and an end to their deviant sexual reign!

We, at CommonBookSense, take pride in knowing that we don't turn books down based specifically on their genre. We know how hard it is for Indie authors to get the recognition that they deserve, and for that reason alone, we often find ourselves stepping outside of our comfort zones to provide reviews for something that we wouldn't necessarily read. Since starting our blog, I can personally say that I find myself skimming over the genres listed, and focus more on the content of the blurb. It's simple, if it catches my eye, I agree to provide a review.  The Taming of Jenesa wasn't an exception.

This book has done something that many have tried and failed....it has almost rendered me speechless. I try to adhere to the "if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all" premise, but it's my job to let you guys know my thoughts on what I've read...I hope you're ready for this one!

One would think that this book, titled 'The Taming of Jenesa,' would be focused on "taming Jenesa," but she was little more than a passing thought until well into the second half of this horribly vile story. Even then, there was no taming involved. The main characters, Bobby and Keri Allen, have a secret life that involves preying upon the weak. They get off by spending their free time manipulating, abusing, and raping anyone who catches their eye. Who the hell does that?!?!?!? I get that people are into different forms of kink, but I'm completely turned off by anything that involves unwilling participants. I am by no means a prudish person, but for the love of all things holy, are these people for real? Better yet, why would someone want to write about such things...?

If I find myself reading something that I don't really enjoy, I typically begin to focus more on the writing style, so that I may at least have something positive to say when writing my review, but in this case the content was just too overpowering. When these monsters weren't seeking out/torturing their next victim, chapters were spent inside the dreams of Keri, which were full of some really strange sci-fi sexual shit. Weird.

After taking a couple moments to mourn the brain cells that committed suicide while I forced myself to finish this book, I plan on spending the next couple days reading something that's worth my time...and yours.

Book Review: The Room (Brian C. Copper)

The Room
by: Brian C. Copper

Genres: Adult, Erotica, BDSM, LGBT
**contains explicit sexual situations**

David and Max meet during the worst snowstorm in recent history when Max, a patrolman in the fictional town of Fullerton, MA becomes stranded at David’s house.

Max soon discovers that David has a secret BDSM playroom in his basement and their adventures begin, bringing them closer as they discover new things about themselves and each other.

Other characters are introduced with time jumps into David’s past, as story lines interweave throughout, exploring various sexual themes between adult gay men.

Let me start this review by saying that I stepped completely out of my comfort zone for this one, but I read it with an open mind. Before I touch on the content I want to note that Brian C. Copper's writing style is one that reminds me why I am so obsessed with reading.  Everything flowed beautifully and was easy to follow.  As the blurb states, this book follows the story of Max and David, but throughout additional characters are introduced, so that the readers can get a better understanding of David's life....and the "room".  David is a unique individual.  I felt like the confidence he had in his sexuality, and his keen ability to experiment with boundaries made him the perfect main character.

Now, on to the content....

I'm not really sure how to articulate my take of The Room.  I guess that the only thing that I need to say is that although, for me, some of the content came across as cringe-worthy and brutal I found myself needing to know what would happen next.  Explicit homosexual encounters may not get me all hot and bothered, but I can confidently say that for those who prefer that type of thing this book will not disappoint.

Book Review: Loving Annalise (Gabriel Contsans)

Loving Annalise
by: Gabriel Contsans

Genres: Romance, Erotica
(contains sexual content)

After years of poverty, heartbreak, loss and betrayal, Tomas enters Annalise's world and shatters the iron casing she's erected around her heart. Tomas is kind, intelligent, romantic and handsome, but he's also her husband's brother! Once Tomas and Annalise meet, they are forever intertwined and repeatedly ripped apart by fate, self-doubt and blackmail. Her husband, Jens, is a brilliant, jealous and manipulative scoundrel who keeps her psychologically under lock and key, until her passion for Tomas sets her free.

**WE WERE GIVEN A FREE COPY OF THIS BOOK IN EXCHANGE FOR THE FOLLOWING HONEST REVIEW**

Loving Annalise, is a tragic love story, with a happy ending.  I feel as though Annalise never considered following her mother's footsteps, until she looked down and realized that she was standing on top of them.  She truly believed that she was in love with Jens, and despite the way that her family felt about him she was determined to make their relationship work......until she met Tomas.  The connection that she and Tomas felt was instantaneous and from that moment it became obvious to them that they were destined to be together, but sometimes (more times than not) life isn't a fairy tale.
Annalise came across as a victim of circumstance.  She is one which many women can relate.  She portrayed the ugly truth of why it's sometimes just easier to stay.  I was able to see her evolve as the book progressed, and the moment that she decided to put her happiness ahead of everything else made me admire her even more.
Jens, on the other hand, easily became a character that I loved to hate.  He was selfish and emotionally abusive.  I'm not really sure why he insisted that Annalise stay with him, considering his extracurricular activities.  His lack of loyalty and love had me hoping that someone....anyone would come along and treat Annalise much better.  I'm not sure how he and Tomas came from the same parents, because they definitely didn't grow up and treat others the same.

I feel obligated to include that this book was ALL over the place.  It was very hard to follow and didn't really get to the point, where I didn't want to put it down, until I was 60% through the book. It contained so much background information that, at times, it was overwhelming.  I would have loved for the story's climax to have come sooner, so that I could have experienced more of Annalise & Tomas's happily ever after.
