Book Review: The Christmas Gift (J. Dietrich)

The Christmas Gift
By: J Dietrich
Genres: Romance, Holiday, Christmas Poetry

Filled with simple and amusing illustrations, this charming story of a man looking for the perfect Christmas present for his wife will immerse the reader in the spirit and romance of the season. After missing out on the “must have” gift of the year, battling unruly mall crowds, and bartering with a riddling elf, he is left with nothing but a mysterious gift wrapped box he can’t get open. But with the help of some Christmas magic he realizes he’s had the perfect gift all along. The same gift that is within us all:

“The best gift to give; the best give to receive."

I know it's a bit after Christmas, but we're going straight down our list, and this one was next, so here we are! I would also like to take a second to let everyone know that we're working our way back to daily reviews.

The Christmas Gift was, for lack of other words, sweet. It perfectly represented the true meaning of Christmas; that gifts aren't important as long as you're loved.

I really liked the way it was written, almost like it was a poem...and the illustrations were adorable. It'd be a really fun book to pull out during the holidays to remind everyone that it's not about how much money you spend on someone. The blurb definitely does the book justice.

Book Review: Cristina (Jake D. Parent)

Cristina
by: Jake D. Parent

Genres: Psychological, Suspense, Thriller

Driven by a desperate need to escape her past, Cristina Rodriguez moves into a picturesque hilltop home with an ocean view. The same place where, four years earlier, a young girl was kidnapped and murdered.

At first, both the house and the scenic California beach town seem perfect. Fresh air. Fresh faces. And the ocean is just ten minutes away. But as Cristina and her daughter set about rebuilding their lives, they soon discover that the past is not about to let go so easily.

A gripping psychological suspense mystery by a #1 bestselling author, Cristina will grab you from the first page and keep you guessing until the very end.

I'm not going to lie; I was a little worried about this one. As I've said MANY times, we accept books based SOLELY on the information that is provided (by either the author, publicist, and/or publisher)....and although I could clearly see that the potential was there, I was scared that Cristina wasn't going to stand out.

There was a chance that it was going to be like the masses.....a simple mean to pass some time.....something that I would forget as soon as I finished the final page.

Boy do I love when I'm proven wrong! Cristina delivered. Jake D. Parent had me sitting on the edge of my seat, and piqued my interest until the very end. You know when you're reading a book and it's so good that you're tempted to skin over the "filler" content to find the good stuff?? This is one of those books! It will have you drawing conclusions, gasping in horror, and literally screaming "WHAT?!?!?".

The blurb simply says it best: "Cristina will grab you from the first page and keep you guessing until the very end." I couldn't agree more, and I can confidently say that anyone (regardless of your choice genre), who picks this one up, won't be disappointed.

**WE WERE GIVEN A FREE COPY OF THIS BOOK IN EXCHANGE FOR THE FOLLOWING HONEST REVIEW**

This book has been sitting in our TBR list for a very long time. In fact, it was one of the very first books that we agreed to review. Being new, to the blogging world, resulted in our making our fair share of mistakes...one of which was expecting part-time reviewers to share our passionate for reading. Life happened, reviewers left, and our TBR list continued to grow. Needless to say, there were times that we became overwhelmed with the requests/support that CommonBookSense was getting and we had a hard time prioritizing. Our authors, fans, publishers, and even our critics are important to us. We made a commitment and, regardless of how behind we've fallen, we intend to keep our word!

Confidence your Secret Weapon is one of those motivational/self-help books that make you take notice. I literally highlighted five key points within the first few pages. Ashley McLean's "former" self is one that I can relate to. I was her in high school. I can very vividly remember the dreadful days of having to read aloud in class. There were times I felt physically ill....wondering if I was the only person who dreaded speaking in front of others. THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN FOR THAT GIRL. It was written in a way that promotes self reflection, while being extremely relatable.

I am certain that I will revisit this book again. It will be my secret "refresher course," anytime I feel like my confidence is wavering. I feel like this would be the perfect book for a high school English to start a new school year with. I know it is definitely one that my daughter will be reading!

Book Review: Player (M L Sparrow)

Player

**WE WERE GIVEN A FREE COPY OF THIS BOOK IN EXCHANGE FOR THE FOLLOWING HONEST REVIEW**

M L  Sparrow easily ranks in our “Top 5 Authors to Review” list, so writing this review is going to be more difficult than I would like.  Don’t go jumping to conclusions just yet…..let me do a little explaining.

Player was a fast-paced read, which made it virtually impossible to put this book down.  The characters were relatable and the storyline was believable, but it’s one that has been beaten to death. Bad boy (player) meets emotionally scarred girl needing rescue, resulting in a little bit of drama…then bad boy reforms into the perfect boyfriend; thus, healing traumatized damsel in distress in the process.  I’d like to say that there was potential for Player to be great, but I don’t really believe that. The book was good, so I guess some could say that it met its potential, but me being a (self-proclaimed) expert in M L  Sparrow’s books calls bullshit.  Bullshit.  This story lacked uniqueness, and because of that I am disappointed.  Now, would I be disappointed if this was my first M L book? Nope, but it isn’t... and so I am.

My advice, to those of you wondering if this is the book for you, is to read it.  It isn’t a book that you’ll regret reading.  You also won’t be left searching for a shank, to gouge your eyeballs out, while you ask yourself wtf you just read.  Just don’t expect it to be something that will change your life, touch your soul, or leave you wanting more.

As you can see, we're back and I can promise that 2017 will be an amazing year for CommonBookSense!

Guest Post: Going Where You've Never Been (Clive Johnson)

Clive Johnson, author of the new book ‘Arabian Nights & Arabian Nights’, suggests that there can sometimes be joys to be had when writing about a subject or a place that is different to an author's own experience.

One of the things that I love when creating a new story is researching the biographies and day-to-day experiences of the types of characters that I want to write about. Sometimes, this involves imagining circumstances and places that I've never encountered myself – including periods in history that might be a little before my time.

This was the case with the story that I wrote to accompany one of the tales of the adventures of Sinbad the Sailor. Given that Baghdad features so strongly in many of the tales of The Nights – it was descriptions of the colorful souks and magic that played out in this very city that excited my interest in some of the tales as a child – I was keen to set one of my stories in this very city.

I've never been to Baghdad, nor does it seem likely that it will be safe for a budget conscious, independent traveler like myself to do so, at least in the foreseeable future. Even if I do eventually have the chance to set foot in the Iraqi capital, I'm sure that many of the wonderful sights that would have greeted the visitor 50 years ago will no longer be around.

This is a real shame. I would love to have seen Baghdad in its heyday, at least as it was around the middle of the last century. The personal recollections that I came across when I was researching my story painted a picture of a magical place, which attracted travelers from all corners of the globe.

But any regret that I have about not being able to experience this once great city must be one million or more times less than the sorrow those who live in Baghdad must feel. The city literally seems to have gone backwards through each of the past few decades. It's well known that many Baghdadis say that life during Saddam Hussein's era of power was far better than that of the experience now.

My story spans life during the time of Saddam and beyond – yet another experience that is very far from my own. Fortunately, some very evocative descriptions of the lives of those who did witness that period are available. Feeling into these is difficult, but I could imagine being transported into the situations that some of the document is described, albeit as an observer.

Reading, storytelling, and writing can all have this effect – time travel, and journeying to foreign lands, can be important aspects of a story’s offering. This is why I sometimes like to work with a subject that is alien to my own experience. Research forces me to discover, reflect upon, and to learn. These are three quests that I hope I never lose a hunger for.

Classic tales from the Arabian Nights retold alongside modern interpretations.
Magic carpets and flying horses, caverns glittering with gold, unexpected plotlines following the fortunes of heroes and villains–who cannot fail to be enchanted by the magic and wonder of the tales of the One Thousand and One Nights?
This most celebrated collections of tales feature shape-shifting and miraculous transportation across continents, powerful jinn who rise like smoke from simple vessels, dreams that delve into the secrets of the subconscious, and gigantic, man-carrying birds.
The backdrop for the tales moves from barren deserts to spectacular cities, from the edge of the world to the inner sanctuaries of mighty rulers. Kings and paupers, benevolent sages and devious magicians, worthy princesses and unscrupulous harlots–all play their part in teaching important truths and providing lively entertainment.
This innovative book offers retellings of a selection of tales that have captured the imaginations of countless people over many centuries. Accompanying each is a short story set in a contemporary context, which reframes the messages and teachings of the original, specifically written for an adult audience.
Here are stories of betrayal and murder, exploitation and sibling rivalry, soul-searching and discovery. The modern parallel tales swap the busy alleyways of old Baghdad for the horror of Saddam's prisons, move from following caravans sweeping across the Sahara to modern day pilgrims trekking along the Caminos of northern Spain, and lift Aladdin out of his cave to unwittingly face Triad gangsters and antiques smugglers.

Arabian Nights & Arabian Nights / Traditional Tales From A Thousand And One Nights, Contemporary Tales For Adults by Clive Johnson is published by Labyrinthe Press and available in paperback, Kindle, and audible versions. (ISBN 978-0-9932029-6-4)

"What happened to CommonBookSense? Where are you guys?"

"What happened to CommonBookSense??? Where are you guys?!?!"

Hey, guys! So, we have some explaining to do. CommonBookSense has not, I repeat, HAS NOT SHUT DOWN!

Summer ended here, so we have lots of responsibilities now. For Shell, it's college (again) and two jobs, for me it's school (only some college classes) and trying to have some semblance of a social life.

With the new influx of responsibilities and grossness, we really haven't had time to read...like, at all. We know it isn't fair to our readers or authors, but there are only so many hours in one day. I really hope you guys can understand this. CommonBookSense doesn't generate revenue, so we have to have jobs. I'm a teenager, so I'm 'required' to have 'regular social interactions' or something like that. We are slowly trying to get into a groove where we aren't such horrible people, but if you have been here from the beginning, you know how long that took us the first time.

Please understand, we love CommonBookSense, but right now it can -- sadly -- only be classified as a hobby, and there are other things that have to come first. We don't love you guys any less!

Keep your noses in the pages, my lovelies. I hope that soon I'll be able to blog you later. <3

Book Review: The Way We Fall (Cassia Leo)

The Way We Fall
by Cassia Leo
Genres: New Adult, Romance

Five pages. A letter holding a secret buried for more than five years. A secret neither of them wanted to know. Will the truth tear them apart... again?

Five years after their messy breakup, Houston and Rory are forced to work together opening up a new wine bar. Despite their tragic past, they find themselves once again drawn to each other, unable to deny their potent attraction.

But the secret of the letter hangs like a guillotine over their heads. And soon, Houston finds himself in the same position he was in five years ago, choosing between the truth and the only woman he’s ever loved.

This book was beautifully executed. You learn about their past as you venture into their future.  It takes a lot to make a book like that work.

The Way We Fall was an amazing story. I really liked how they didn't really ignore their feelings. Even though Rory was scared of getting heartbroken again, she still trusted Houston and her heart.
--
I'm never one who supports cheating. I have a very firm belief that if you're unhappy enough  to cheat on your significant other that you should just be with the person you're cheating with! Why stay when you're not happy! This is where you say "Wow, if a sixteen year old can see it, why can't adults?"...My point exactly!
Anyway, he was going to do the right thing, so that's what counts, I guess. It's not like he loved her, really, I mean, she'd threatened him into staying.

Back on topic, this book was really good. There were a few bouts of mature content, but nothing that made me queasy. I liked it! I'm reading the third book now, so really, I must have enjoyed the first one.

As always, links can be located below. Feel free to use them!

Keep your noses in the pages, my loves. I'll blog you later!!

J.L. Leslie did it again.

Demons From My Past was everything that I was hoping it'd be. Kingsley, Paxton, and the rest of the characters were the complete package. Sometimes authors put so much emphasis on the story line that they neglect to ensure that the characters are fully developed, so it's refreshing when an author gifts us with characters which are as developed as these.

This ended up being another one of those books that I purposely put down...in order to prolong the inevitable.

Demons From My Past is yet another example of J.L. Leslie's amazing talent as a writer. I haven't a doubt that what ever she writes will go above and beyond your expectations.

Confessions Of A Book-Blogger #1: What Time Do You Typically Read?

I don’t really know why I called this “Confessions of a Book-Blogger” when I’m answering a question presented to myself by myself….but the name sounds clever, so we’re going to go with it.

I typically read at night. I find it easier to focus after I’ve brushed my teeth, emptied my ever-full bladder, and curled up in my cozy (or rather sweltering) loft bed...in the dark. I especially like it when my whole family has already been asleep for a few hours. The only sounds to distract me are the ones of my possible serial killer, the house settling, and one of our many dogs that bark at each other’s breathing.

At any time in my house..well, not really during the week, but still, there are at least two tvs going with deaf people attached to the remotes. 20+ emails in our inbox, six doglets running around trying to kill me and/or each other (kill me by giving me a hernia because they’re always into things and also trying to kill each other; one dog is well over 200 pounds, and easily a foot and a half bigger than me on his hind legs). And then there’s the ever present lure of Netflix (and occasional YouTube gaming or Pinterest binges). Netflix usually wins. I tell myself that, since I’m watching it on the blog computer that I MUST be doing something productive

But, I get very easily distracted. Example: I spent 30 minutes figuring out how to put a that gif there, then another 5 finding one, and another 5 trying to find another and failing. I have these big notions of waking up early and going for a run and then being a productive member of this internet community….Never happens.

To answer the question: I do most of my reading at night and….sometimes well into morning….like today. My yesterday never ended. I finished two unplanned books (the whole series or I would have read longer), and got up at five. I then had this  stroke of genius...or maybe just a regular one, we’ll never know because I have a habit of getting distracted by new good ideas.

Nonetheless, I feel like Shell and I run a pretty cool blog. Yeah, our reviews go up a little late sometimes, or our grammar isn’t perfect, but we’re human.

Guest Post: M.L. Sparrow on 'Do You Believe In Age Limits for Books?'

Hi everyone!

I’m M L Sparrow, the author of Ghetto, The Demon Inside, No Rest for the Wicked and the soon to be released, Player. Two of my books are YA novels, whilst No Rest for the Wicked is an Adult Romance and Player is aimed at the older end of the New Adult spectrum, due to sexual scenes. Which brings me to the subject of this post: Do you believe in age limits for books?

Personally, I don’t. Having discovered Adult Romance at the age of twelve, with Keri Arthur’s Full Moon Rising, I instantly fell in love with the genre. Shocked at first by the content, I was instantly intrigued and went on to discover authors like Kresley Cole, Nalini Singh and Gena Showalter, who remain some of my favourite writers. I had always loved reading and writing, but Adult Romance opened up a whole new world I was previously unaware of, or at least, uninformed about.

Now, I know what some of you are thinking. Twelve, that’s far too young to be reading books of a sexual nature! But, before you faint, think of it this way. If teenagers are reading about sex, from books that also explore the emotions and context behind the act, surely that is better than simply searching for porn on the internet… They are being allowed to explore sex in a safe environment, rather than remaining uninformed and potentially going out and doing something irresponsible or dangerous.

Of course, in this day and age, where anyone can self-publish whatever they want (I’m not knocking it, after all, I’m also a self-published author), its easy to stumble upon BDSM or dark romance masquerading as simple romance novels, so a little caution to young readers is advisable. But then, if you avoid them like the plague, how are you ever going to know whether or not you enjoy them? And there’s no harm in reading about kinky sex! I discovered Cherise Sinclair (an erotic novelist) at fifteen and it never did me any harm! To be fair, by that age, teenagers should know the difference between right and wrong and where to draw the line, so I honestly don’t believe reading certain material can do any harm.

Sex isn’t the only thing to worry about though. I talked to several people about this post, just to gauge general opinion, and most agreed with my view, but one disagreed strongly and used a book called ‘Fight Club’ to make his point. Not having read ‘Fight Club’ I immediately went out and got a copy, but was a little disappointed that it didn’t actually shock me. Sure, it was twisted and violent, but no more so than some of the programs that are on TV or some video games, which makes my point. Why should books for teenagers be censured when video games and films are often worse. And yes, I know those things have age limits, but lets be honest, very few people actually listen to those!

If you still have doubts, as yourself this; Would you prefer your teenager to be reading about sexual acts, thereby educating themselves, or to remain ignorant and perhaps later end up in trouble?

At the time I thought my addiction to Adult Romances was a great secret; I’d hide my books in draws – before I got a Kindle, anyway! – and then, when my collection got too big, I’d put them on my bookshelves with the spine facing the wall! Now, I’m well aware that, since I was using her card (with permission of course) to purchase my books from Amazon, my mum was likely aware of the type of books I was reading, however, she never tried to stop me from reading them which I’m intensely grateful for, since I believe they helped me grow up with well rounded opinions and a healthy attitude towards sex and relationships.

So, whether you’re a teen or in your hundreds and you like sweet, sexy contemporary romances, check out Player, which will be released on the 1st of September!

Before I go, a quick thanks to Kailei and Shell for letting me have some space to chat on their blog.

And a big thanks to M.L. for taking the time to chat with us! We adore your view on age limits, and strongly agree. We have many (hundreds, probably) of erotica books on our JOINED Kindle account....and both of us read it and discuss the books. Saying someone isn't allowed to read/watch/play something doesn't mean they won't go out and do it...nor does it mean that they won't witness or experience it on some level at one point in their life. We think it shouldn't be based on age, so much as maturity.

As always, you can find all of M.L.'s links below, if you're interested in checking out her books! We'll include the blurbs and cover photos for them below.  Reviews for Ghetto, and Player are to come! Kailei has already reviewed The Demon Inside, so you can see that below as well!

My name’s Sunny Grace Beaumont. Branded SGB/2/6895/03.12.93. Only child, self-taught computer geek and cancer survivor. Oh, and did I mention my dad’s the President? As you can imagine that’s sometimes a little problematic, especially when I want to sneak out. But it never got me into quite as much trouble as the night I ventured into the Ghetto – don’t ask me why I was there in the first place… it was stupid. Everyone knows that the Ghetto is where hardened criminals are sent to live out the remainder of their lives. At first the men that kidnap me are just as I’d imagine, mean and thoughtless, but slowly I begin to have doubts.

I meet a guy. His name’s Sin, he has no Brand – a crime punishable by death – and he’s the rebel leader. I should hate him… but I don’t. Instead he opens my eyes to a whole other side of the Ghetto, where people are innocent of the crimes they’re accused of and helpless children suffer dreadful poverty. Is it possible that I’ve been lied to my entire life… that the governments been deceiving everyone? And how can I challenge the law my own dad is adamant to uphold?
