I clicked on A Fistful of Evil, not even knowing that it was sent in via review request....boy, was I ever surprised.

While we were originally asked to review A Fistful of Fire, but this one is the first book in the series, so we've gotta review this one first.

The author creates such a unique and intricate world surrounding her amazing characters. I honestly think it's brilliant because the main character, Madison, goes into this new world with as much understanding of it as us. So, throughout the story, you're learning things that not even Madison knew. More than once, she asked a question that I was wanting an answer for.

Although the world the author creates is intricate, she describes it in such a way that I never once had to stop and say "Whoa, what does that look like?", I always had a clear image of what was being described, which is part of the reason that I genuinely enjoyed this book.

Not only are her descriptive skills up to par, her characters are all....well...just AMAZING! Madison is just someone that I could honestly see myself being friends with. She's very easy to connect with, even though we have very little in common. All of the other characters the author threw into the mix were just as amazing as Madison...I mean....Helloooo Nikooo..!! I really hope that she ends up with Niko, I don't know why, but I love him more than Dr. Love. Hah 'love him more than Dr. Love'..... I picture Niko as Shemar Moore? Am I wrong? Does that give you an idea as to his hotness level? I sure hope so, because both of their hotness levels can be compared to an inferno. I'm not even being dramatic.

It's definitely one of those books that you sit down to read and then it's suddenly two in the morning and you're greedily downloading the sample for book two...trust me, I speak from experience. It for sure pulls you in right from the start. My mom probably thought I was crazy...I mean, A Fistful of Evil had me laughing like crazy.


A Fistful of Evil is for sure going on the top of  my "Fantasy Favorites" list that exists only in my head.

I honestly would and WILL tell my two point five friends to read this over and over until they actually read it and we can talk about it. I definitely need a gossip buddy for this book...

So now, here I am, eagerly waiting for the author to reply to my email and, hopefully, send A Fistful of Fire....Gah, if only we had KindleUnlimited still! Why, oh whyyy is the world such a cruel place!? What have I done to deserve this?! I only have a few more pages in the sample....send help...

Woah, woah, woah! Slow yer roll! FOUR REVIEWS IN A WEEK?! Three of them from KAILEI?! Wooaahhhhh, what's going on here?! Is this what productivity feels like??!


Okkkaaayyyy, so, I can honestly say that I am quite disappointed in myself. Lemme tell you why; I read this series probably more than two years ago, and I couldn't, for the life of me, remember what they were about. So, on my quest for some trashy romance, I kept scrolling through the kindle (which I recently discovered houses over 550 books). Now, with over 550 books right at my fingertips, you'd think that I'd have no trouble at all finding some trashy romance..after all, it's my mother's favorite genre. Back on track. I was scrolling and scrolling and I kept passing this series. I knew I'd read it, and I was mad that i couldn't remember anything, so, I said to myself "K, Kailei. Haha, 'K, Kailei'. Why don't you just reread the books? If you remember, do what you always do; quit reading." So I did.

Oh lordy, I haven't the words. These books so closely resemble Twilight that I think I might metaphorically die. But is it bad that I enjoyed them?.....Yes, yes it is.


I feel like Erica Stevens looked at Twilight and said "Hm....what would I do if I wrote it?" Now, I'm not saying they're absolutely horrid, I mean, I got exactly what I wanted; A quick, thoughtless read. I needed a break after reading author requested ones that make me have think.

While the whole "Make-eye-contact-once-with-stranger-and-instantly-in-love" thing bothers me. I liked that it was a different spin on the whole thing; Cassie, Melissa, and Chris are Hunters, so they know about vampires, they hunt them, the whole nine yards. But Cassie and Devon's insane amount of inappropriate PDA made even ME uncomfortable. And the internal dialogue. Ugh, don't even get me started. I found myself skipping several pages to get around Cassie's annoying thoughts. It's like there's an hour between her replies....how annoying. I ask myself how she can ever hold a conversation with anyone.

So, with the knowledge that they hunt vampires, and that they know of their existence, and the fact that Cassie is the most strong-willed of the three, you'd think the author would have had some sense to not make her a blubbering fool every thirty seconds! Oh my god! "I never cried before Devon, but now I cry ALL the time bc I'm a little baby haha!" Seriously?! IF YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE A CHARACTER STRONG PHYSICALLY AS WELL AS EMOTIONALLY IN THE BEGINNING, AT LEAST HAVE THE DECENCY TO NOT COMPLETELY ALTER THEIR ENTIRE PERSONALITY OVER A FREAKING BOY! Oh my god, really. I get it, she's happier or whatever, but you don't go from a hard-headed, strong-willed person, to someone who needs a man to breathe. It's just wrong. God, Cassie was especially annoying in the second book. She cried alllllllllll the time, oh my GOOODDDD. I bet she's dehydrated ALLL the freaking time, with as many tears as she's been shedding.  And with as many time's as I've read the words "cascading", I'm probably saying it in my sleep! "Her hair cascaded around her shoulders", "her cascading hair", "her cascading golden hair", blah blah blah cascading.

You know, I'm actually really worried about Cassie. As many times as I've read about her heart leaping, being in her eyes, being in her throat, sinking, melting, and everything in between, I'm beginning to think she has some serious heart problems....that, or her heart is trying out to be an Olympic runner... Yeah, I'm going with the former. (Seriously, I was going to try to do a slideshow thingy of the screenshots of highlights about her heart, but there were literally over a hundred....)

Something else I noticed that was annoying...Let me explain how I discovered it first; When I read books, especially since CommonBookSense started, I find myself highlighting points in the book that I either want to touch in my review, or are what made me decide whether the book was good or bad. So, I was going on my merry way, reading through the book and I come across a yellow highlighted section. Mind you, I do NOT highlight on my kindle in yellow. Nope, it's pink. So I read it and clicked it wondering what in the world had made that pop up. I played with the idea that it was from when I read these books before, but I had a different phone then...So I read the highlighted portion AND IT WAS AN EXACT COPY OF SOMETHING I HIGHLIGHTED IN THE BEGINNING OF THE BOOK! Once I noticed that, I couldn't help but continue to notice repeated lines again and again. It honestly really annoyed me. I also feel like, in this book, she took out the shortened versions of words (ex: We'll and I'll) that she had in the first book just to get her word count up. I feel this way because, not only was this not the case in the first book, but it really doesn't match the characters' way of speaking.

Now, I know what you might be thinking..."But, Kailei, you're already on the third book, if you hated them so much, why do you keep reading?" To tell you the truth, I don't even know. I guess it's because it's a thoughtless read; I missed getting lost in the words of a book. I missed reading over 400 pages in less than 6 hours. I got lost in this book, no matter it's insane number of flaws.

Honestly, I can see why I forgot about what happened. Nothing about these books lingers. I honestly feel like they could have all been a single book, seeing as they get nothing accomplished in the first 2.5.  If it weren't for the fact that I'm sitting here, writing this review, I imagine I'd forget about it again. There are times when I kind of remember reading it, but when you read so many books, a book or a character really has to stand out, or else it'll just bleed together with all the others.

Book Review: Dying for a Living (Kory M. Shrum)

Dying for a Living was a book that I actually downloaded on a whim. I was searching for free books to add to my kindle and I came across this one. It'd been on my Kindle for an unknown amount of time and I really wanted something overly fictional. Honestly, this book was exactly what I was looking for.

To call Dying for a Living a Zombie book would be like comparing a Pug to an orange....It's just wrong.
Now, I can't exactly say that I've read Zombie books (I actually have a full-blown phobia of zombies, nightmares and everything), besides that one Walking Dead book that I was forced to read and  was actually really good, but I can almost-confidently say that you can't compare this book to zombies. No brains involved, just, ya know, dying and coming back to life...totally not zombies.

Jesse Sullivan is a Death Replacement agent; she literally dies for people so that they don't have to...the only difference is that she comes back to life. Like with nearly everything that's not mentioned in the bible, the church is heavily against it....who'd have thought?  I guess in the time the author set the book ( I think sometime in the future perhaps), you can compare Necronites to the LGBT community today, you know, how they're treated/how the church sees it?  That ties into the book HUGELY, so remember that, alright? About the church thing...Sorry..possible spoilers, I'll stop now.

The whole basis and idea for this book was so unique and amazing. The characters' views didn't change half way through the book, either. My favorite character in the ENTIRE WORLD WAS WINSTON! HE WAS A PUG! Gah, my baby, Sullie, is a pug! (Not like baby with a capital B, but my fur-covered-dog-baby.) While there WAS a love-triangle, it didn't take up the entire story....The author was going somewhere, and she didn't let a little love triangle stop her! I honestly can't say that I found a single of her characters annoying, which is saying something. AND THE FEMALE LEAD WAS MY FAVORITE KIND! Just yes! She was witty, sarcastic and strong-willed! I loved every single minute of this book! Every character Kory M. Shrum presented, I fell in love with.




Now, I'm going to have to cut this review rather short because, well, I REALLY want to rave on and on and on about this book, but I have another review to write and another book to read! Hello, all of you adorable, lovely people! How are you, guys?? Good? Great! Oh, I've been better, but thanks for asking! That was very sweet of you! Do we have any male readers? Do we have ANY readers? Maybe not, but that's okay. If you are a mysterious reader, and you are male, does it offend you that I call you my "lovely"? I sure hope not. (tell me in the comments!!)

I am finally feeling better, so I've erased all of the horrible review that was here before, and am writing this one! Yay!

Okay, my darlings, this book. Thissssssss boookkk, oh. My. Gosh. It is was so good! I have never really read a book surrounding wizards (besides Harry Potter, of course), so I didn't know exactly what to expect. I had actually not had any desire to read a wizardy book. I dunno, I guess Harry Potter set the bar WAY too high, and I didn't want to disappoint myself.

Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised with James Patterson. I was almost disappointed that it was a good book, like I was betraying J.K. by liking other wizard books.

Something that I really like about this book was that it started straight from page one. You didn't have to wait at all for the plot to start off.

I actually got the book in physical form, which makes me very happy. It was a decently large book (you could compare it to The Sorcerer's Stone, in length(why are there so many er-s on Sorcerers?? (yes, I looked it up)(parenthesis INCEPTION)), but at the same time it felt like it was really, really short. I think it may have been because nothing...really got achieved? Maybe?

Okay, before I get stoned to death, I should point out that Witch&Wizard is NOT anything like Harry Potter, no real spells, no robes, or quills. It's like a pre/post-apocalyptic world PLUS wizards. I think they can be classified as something other than wizards....magical people? I dunno, but they had magical powers! And it was apocalypse via the government, which was a nice change from aliens. The only thing that really has bothered me is that they're looking for their parents still (as far as less than half through the second book), and I feel like I'll be really disappointed if they  spend they entire series trying to find their parents, rather than leading the rebellion like they're supposed to.

I DO like that the book is mostly just kids. Like, the rebellion is led by a bunch of teenagers, and they go and save lots of little kids. and The One Who Is The One does kind of give off a Voldemort vibe, but instead of being He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named, he's He-Who-Shall-Be-Worshiped-By-All-And-If-U-Don't-Worship-Him-He'll-Vaporize-You. He's kind of a walking contradiction because he's banned all forms of magic (even the word), but he's like all powerful with his magic. So, apparently, he's allowed to use it, but nobody else is? Hypocrite much??

I don't know what else to say, really. It was a good book! It pulled me in from the very first page, even though it wasn't a book that I'd have picked up on my own.  I really, really like the way it's written. It goes between Whit and Wisty and it's like they're the ones that are telling their story (in the second one I was told to go back and do some rereading, which was the highlight of the book so far haha). So it was like they were the ones who'd written the book. I got the second and third book with a Christmas gift card...I love book money! Books-A-Million didn't have the same cover edition for the third book, so my first and second book match, but the third doesn't (there are more book, but I only had so much money on the card and books be expensive, yo. Even paperbacks), so it kinda REALLY annoys me, like WHY NO MATCH?! But I needed the third book haha. Anyway,  I'm about 160 pages into the second book (The Gift), I dunno why I haven't finished it yet, I think it's because I need something new. Maybe I'll find a diamond in our review requested book list!

Book Review: Anissa of Syria: A Christian Refugee's Saga From The Syrian War To The American Dream (Jonah Pierce)

There are so many things that I need to say about this book.  In fact, I found myself jotting down notes almost immediately.  First, let me begin by saying that this book could have been so much more.  As the above blurb states, the premise of this book is to follow a Christian-Syrian girl named Anissa.  She leaves her native country of Syria, to escape the brutality Islamic extremists are enforcing on Syrian-Christians.  She finds herself starting over in New York City, and takes  readers along for the ride.  

Anissa's journey is beautifully written, and the parts that focused solely on her overcoming her horrific past, and evolving into the young woman, who would make any parent proud, had me eager to turn the page to find out what would happen next.  The author's brilliant writing made it very easy to get a good read of each of the characters, shortly after they were introduced.  The relationships that Anissa built with both Michael and Julien had me rooting for one one minute and then the other the next.  So, one might ask why I started this review by stating that I felt a bit let down, right? 

 I say that the true potential of this book wasn't met because of the excessive overflow of religious/political information that, at times, took away from Anissa's personal journey.  I feel like the the author is going to lose readers, who are looking for a "pleasure" read.  I appreciated the necessary background information, but at times I felt like I was reading a religious study book and/or a history textbook, which made following along confusing and difficult.  


With all that being said, I truly enjoyed reading  Anissa of Syria: A Christian Refugee's Saga From The Syrian War To The American Dream.....and that's saying a lot because this genre of book isn't typically my forte.  The author's ability to connect the readers and the characters has taught me to expand my reading horizons, and showed me that I might just be missing out on a great book by judging it by its cover....or genre.

Salutations! It's me, Esther. Welcome to my very first review ever! Please, make yourself comfortable...I'm unsure of what else to say, so let's just go! *celebratory noises*


Something you should know about me is that I'm very easily distracted and really picky. I need a book to pull me in and keep me in its clutches. The writer needs to make me want to read that next sentence and turn to the next page. In the end, a book shouldn't be a bunch of words on stacked paper. It's a journey. Or, at least it's supposed to feel like one. You're supposed to become the characters; see what they see, feel what they feel. By the time that book is finished, you should not be the same person you were when you read the first word. 2022 definitely did not meet that expectation.
The idea of this book is great. It drew me in immediately. I mean, read the blurb! However, as soon as I'd read the first three chapters, I knew it wasn't a book I wanted to continue reading. First of all, there were way too many characters for me to keep track of. New people were being introduced constantly and they were connected in this complicated way that was way too much for my brain. Not just that, though. The characters were so difficult to connect with. 2022 was written almost like a news article. There was no emotion. Therefore, I could not immerse myself in the story, effectively ruining the reading experience. Secondly, the writing wasn't that great. I'm fairly sure I spotted two grammatical errors in the first chapter. Plus, the only time I recall any of the characters expressing an emotion, it was so awkward for me to read. I can't stand reading awkward sentences. I'm an awkward person already. I don't need to be surrounded by more awkwardness! To be honest, I don't think I got past the fifth chapter. I simply couldn't focus anymore. The characters were all jumbled and I was confused by the attempts at humor. However, it all depends on you, dearest reader. If you're the kind of person who can keep track of a bunch of characters at once, it could work. If you can get past the awkward emotions, try it. And if you do read it, can you please tell me the outcome? What?

I'm curious.

Okay, so today I'm reviewing Let Love In which is a romance novel. To be honest I was in the mood for a romance novel so I got this one for free on iBooks. Its the first book in a pretty long series. As of this moment I am on book three (Let Love Shine). This book is good, its not out of this world or anything like that, but it will get you out of a reading slump(books like this often do). Its your basic romance novel. Its easy to read and fun. It starts off with a girl named Maddy who has lost her parents and ends up living with her aunt.... who then dies a while after that. After Maddy's aunt dies she lives with her best friend and her best friend's mother (Melanie and Momma) and from there her and Melanie move to college. There she makes friends and meets Reid. He seems like a douche at first but they soon begin to fall in love. After they have grown close and are in a very committed relationship Reid tells Maddy his secret. He lost his family too, but in a totally different way(I won't spoil it for you). They fall deeper and deeper in love, and then some things happen and I can't really tell you about it because I would ruin it for you. Anyway its a pretty good book and I would recommend it. Maybe not for people ages below like 14 because there are some parts that aren't THAT appropriate(*cough sex parts*cough*). All right that is all for today loves! Book Review: Rippler: book one of the Ripple Series (Cindy Swanson)

The more Sam is with Will, the less she can imagine life without him, but the time is coming when she must choose between keeping Will in her life or keeping Will safe.

I actually read this book quite a while ago....but I put off writing a review because my beloved mother wouldn't get me the second book. In the end, I was kind of glad she didn't because I think that this may have turned into one of those series that I stopped reading about the fifth book because it just didn't pull my interest anymore...that happens a lot.... But, I'll never know because I haven't got the second, third, or fourth books...... haha.


Okay, in all honesty, this book was a really quick read, but I can't say "If you're looking for a quick read then you should totally pick this book up!" because it IS a series of seven.....and because I read like lightning fast...


I really don't have much to say about this book, sadly. It was a predictable in the "I love THIS boy" kind of way, but there were quite a few plot twists.

This wasn't a book that I begged for mom to let me get the series because I felt as though I had already read books that were nearly just like it...But it was original in its own way, at the same time.

On a great sidenote, it was free?! The bad thing about getting free books is that the rest of the series usually ISN'T free..


Anywhoo, this was just a really short, not very great review...Sorry about that. I did really enjoy the book, and I would read the second if I had it.

Yass, I have finally found a good book under the genre that I am slightly obsessed with as of late.
Mindspeak is one of the books that I used in/on SensibleBookSunday..I think it might have been about a week ago. So, this is a plus, you guys can get it for the low, low price of FREE!
Okay, so no secret that I'm super into books with witty female protagonists and people with supernatural powers.


I mean, just, WOW, this book was full of twists and turns. I personally didn't enjoy how, I don't want to say 'weak', but how weak the female protagonist was at some moments, it confused her character, but she did the "When something bad happens, I'm gonna go and cry into the chest of strong male lead," one second, and then the next she had the whole "Me female, me no need man!" mentality  down to a point, but then she goes and acts like a damsel in distress again, and it's kind of annoying, as well as mind-boggling that she changes views like that. What mentality will Lexi be wearing today? Some of you may not feel this way about it, and I found it really easy to look over because I enjoyed reading it, but this is about what Kailei thought of the book, not what Kailei thinks you might think of the book...

Now, I have to be kinda careful because I've already finished the second book, and three or four chapters of the third (that's my bad habit; I don't put down my tablet until I finish the whole series, not even to write up a review for you guys), but I've taken a small break from reading to watch Netflix and I thought "Hm, the blog has been a little lacking lately, why not write up a review really quickly?" So here I am!

There are some really unpredictable plot twists, remember that this is coming from the girl that can tell you what's going to happen in a book after reading the first three pages. So many trust issues happening in this book, I mean, wooaaahhhh, all da issues.

I dunno, I think that the reason I enjoyed this book is because it's pretty original, (meaning that I haven't read a book that's exactly like this), her dad is a super smart scientist, her dad kept loads of the truth form her...all of the truth, really. She has two mothers, not even the "my dad remarried, so now I have two moms" or "I was adopted. so I have two moms", she LITERALLY has two mothers. *Mind explodes* You'll understand later in the book, if I'm not completely confusing the first and second book and now you'll be waiting to find out, but you don't until the second book, so I made you really confused......The consequences could be dire! Do what you will with said information.

Okay, so the first book is free, but the second and third cost around three-four dollars each, for the eBook, not the physical copy, which, in my opinion, isn't too crazy.


And Jack is just pretty amazing. *leaves this here and backs away slowly*

Book Review: Hush, Hush: book one of the Hush, Hush Series (Becca Fitzpatrick)

      This is another one of those books that have been on my list for quite a while. I actually borrowed it from a friend of a friend a few years ago, but I just never go down to reading it...Boy, do I regret that now....
  This book is one of those "Oh my GOD, just get together already!" books. It did have a HUGE plot twist, well, two plot twists, actually, that I honestly wasn't expecting.
  This is positively one of those "Don't put it down until you turn the last page" books, I finished it in just under six hours....who needs sleep, am I right?... and started the second one...then the third one...then the fourth one...
    My favorite thing about this book has to be that the main protagonist is such a witty smart mouth; those are my favorite type of characters.


!Warning! Slight, possible spoilers, but meh.

Can we just talk about Patch for a second?? *fans face* What a total hottie! I like a good, attractive male character as much as anyone else, but Patch is so infuriatingly mysterious, and just *indecipherable noise*. Patch is one of those guys that screams "mysterious bad boy", someone most girls mom's would hate for their daughters to bring home. Not you, right, mom? He falls under the title "Boys That Are Positively Kailei's Type", so I may have  liked him more than some people would.
 
   Okay, back on topic, the book is just a little bit predictable, but that's coming from someone who lives for these kinds of books, and can tell you the ending to almost every book by the second chapter, so don't take my word for it, but I thought it was a little predictable.
   The plot twist completely derailed me, it was CRAZY unexpected!

      I think it's Nora's sarcastic ways that really make me like her. Her and Vee's (her best friend) *finger quotes* detective work made me face-palm and feel embarrassed for them on more than one occasion...

    Overall, this is a really good book, a little crazy, but it has a hot boy, so that's something? The second book is better and worse at the same time, strangely enough it reminded me of when I read Twilight; New Moon, all that time ago, because it stirred up the same feelings that I had while reading that book.

    Anywayysss, before I get carried away, I may do a review on the second book after I finish reading the fourth one...I finished two books yesterday, whoops. I also read the book Rippler, the first book in a series of SEVEN, idk how I keep finding such long series, geez. I read a series of ten (it has a SEQUEL series, yes, a SEQUEL SERIES FOR A SERIES WITH 10 BOOKS, it's crazy!) and I'm debating on whether or not to review those. I still don't have the second Ripple book, but I'm working on it :3
